Golden Eagle Lodge

About Us

Like the valley we reside in, you will find the Lodge has a unique history, marked by the recurring theme that each subsequent owner had one desire: to live in Red River. For those of us not so fortunate to dwell in the lovely valley, the Golden Eagle provides a home away from home.

The current operators, Jerry and Marla Vowell, go out of their way to not only provide quality service, but create an atmosphere of warmth, hearth and heart. And like the Lodge, they too have their own story. When visiting the lodge be sure to ask them about how they moved to Red River from Texas.

The people who visit here, the Vowell's, and the Lodge itself, all of our stories intersect. Contribute yours to the Golden Eagle Experience.

History

The Golden Eagle Lodge was built in the mid-1960's by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Stults. They were from Richardson, Texas and enjoyed their time in Red River; they built the Golden Eagle so they could live in Red River full time and earn a living. They operated the excellent Lodge until 1975 when they sold it to Eddie and Barbara Dry. Eddie Dry was a professor at Baylor University in Waco, TX and had been taking church groups to Red River for several years. Eddie and his wife Barbara decided they would like to live full time in Red River and purchased the Golden Eagle. They operated the Lodge for several years. Eddie developed expertise in tourism and began teaching at the University of New Mexico in the 1980's; they employed managers to operate the Lodge during this time.

In 1997, the Drys decided to consolidate their investments in Albuquerque and sold the Lodge to Jim Truitt and Richard Scott, both on the faculty at Baylor University and former employers of Eddie Dry. Truitt and Scott immediately began a complete renovation of the Golden Eagle. They continue to upgrade the grand Lodge. During the tenure of their ownership, they have leased the Lodge to the capable and caring operators Jerry and Marla Vowell to help build upon the Golden Eagle Lodge's rich heritage.
